Nuts for Natives hopes to make it easy to create your enchanting garden one plant at a time. "Where to Buy" is a list of retail and online nurseries where you can reliably find native plants when you want them. Thankfully the list is growing. If we are all to aim for a garden filled with 70% native plants, we are going to need more plants!

That said, it still takes commitment to garden with native plants. In case you missed it, here is advice on shopping for native plants for your garden.

There is a crop of nurseries selling native plants through channels other than brick and mortar and online regular retail. These specialty nurseries can provide great rewards for taking a few extra steps.

A full profile of Bona Terra is here. Bona Terra maintains an on-line website of inventory and delivery is free for orders over $300 to the Washington D.C. area. You can also shop by appointment at their Anne Arundel County location.

Barry Glick is a well known plantsman and native plant advocate among other pursuits. His website is filled with information about both native and ornamental plants available by mail. While the website does not have a list of all available plants; some plants have an order form you can download and mail in with your check. For others, you can inquire by e-mail about whether they are available. If available, once you determine whether it will be shipped as a bulb, bare root or potted plant and when, you mail a check to complete the order. Fans say the process is well worth availability of hard to find native plants.

This new tree nursery in Clarksburg, Maryland sells many species of very young native trees -- ideal if you are planting a large area, want to save money or know that young trees tend to establish and grow much more robustly in the long run. It's also a chance to find varieties of native trees that are not readily available. Shopping is by appointment only. Small trees are the easiest to plant too!

The feature of a recent blog post, Wildflower Natives is a backyard nursery and shop by appointment only. A great source for a curated selection of healthy quart sized perennials.

Happy gardening!

We want you to be as excited about planting Chesapeake natives as we are. “Plant This or That” gives you a native alternative to popular plants. Other posts highlight really fabulous fauna native to the Chesapeake.
