What a way to spend a winter day!
Deep into February we may get a few temperate days though likely they will be fleeting. If you have gardening on your mind, how about cozying up to your favorite computing spot with a warm beverage and immersing yourself in one of these on-line events?
Thursday, February 16th
Benjamin Vogt of Monarch Gardens is offering a 3 part series titled "Unlawning America" beginning on the 16th about converting lawns to meadows. You can take one or the series. Topics include fundamentals of natural garden layers and green mulching with sedge plugs. He is based in Nebraska so the plants and conditions will likely differ from the land of the Chesapeake though techniques and perspectives should be adaptable. More info here. Thursdays, February 16th, 23rd and March 2nd from 2 to 3:30pm. Cost is $19 each.
Friday, February 17th
GreenScapes is a day long zoom event promising to be a learning opportunity to effect positive environmental change whether in your home garden or through professional work. Topics include landscape design strategies and maintenance practices to bring visual order to naturalistic gardens. The Montgomery County event is offered as a series of live online lectures with audience Q&A. More info here. Friday, February 17th, 9:30 to 4. Cost is $55.
Thursday, February 23rd
Patterson Park Audubon Center says spring is on its way! They note longer days and flowers blooming means migratory birds will arrive in Maryland looking for something to eat in our gardens. This Wildlife Gardening Workshop via Zoom is perfect for those just starting out and will help you transform your home, school, work, or community space into a bird and butterfly paradise! Farther afield, Darrel Morrison who is a landscape designer and educator known for his ecology-based approach presents an on-line talk "Beauty of the Wild." His work includes native plant gardens in Wisconsin and New York. More info here. Thursday, February 23rd from 2 to 3 pm. Cost is $15.
